Iridium Satellite LLC and Sarantel (AIM: SLG) announce that the Sarantel PowerHelix antenna technology was selected for, and is being built into, the just-released Iridium 9555 handset. Traditionally Iridium has been famous for providing global coverage to places far away from civilization on brick like bulky phones. The company has now tried its best to go slim with the 9555; the phone has managed to reduce 27% of its weight and 30% of its volume. “The ability of Iridium to reduce the antenna size, without sacrificing performance, was a critical design element for this revolutionary new handset,” said David Schoen, chief technology officer, Iridium.

The Iridium 9555 is design to work under the world’s toughest environments. It is also featuring a brighter screen, a speaker phone, improved Short Messaging Service (SMS) and email capabilities, and an upgraded mini-USB data port.  The phone claims a standby time of 30 hours with a talk time of four hours. The menu is configurable for 21 different languages, and the address book has been expanded for longer contacts lists. International codes are programmable for automatic dialing, and a help function is built in. The 9555 handset will be available from Iridium service partners starting in November 2008.
Nokia is out with a new CDMA phone – 2228. Nokia 2228 is a slender monoblock device that combines an ultra lightweight design with an LED indicator. The low-end device seems designed to help the Finnish giant grab some marketshare in the CDMA space, where traditionally Nokia doesn’t stack well.Comes in a slim candy bar design, Nokia 2228 has 110 x 40 x 12 mm and its weight only 72 grams.Works on CDMA 1x, 800 MHz.

It’s an affordable 1.3 megapixel camera phone with a built in Nokia media player, supporting most of the common digital formats. It comes with speaker dependent voice recognition, an integrated handsfree speaker and can be used as a modem which allows a consumer to use their phone to connect to a PC for internet access. This Nokia cDMA phone also features stereo FM radio,  20-25 MB internal memory and video recorder. Nokia 2228 will be launched before the end of 2008 in select CDMA markets, which most probably means the US too. Its price was not announced, but it’s said to be an affordable one. Logical, since the handset only offers entry-level capabilities.

The new Motorola AURA that looks simply gorgeous seems as an effort to grab a piece of the luxury handset market and compete with likes of Vertu and Mobiado. The $2000 ‘Aura’, which has a circular screen, 62-carat sapphire crystal lens, and 200-part rotating mechanism that’s “more like opening a luxury car door than accessing a mobile device.” According to Motorola’s website, the expensive device combines “superb craftsmanship and a distinctive interface†and delivers “a sensory experience that is second to none for those with refined tastes.â€

Besides the call quality you will find a 2-megapixel camera, microUSB port, Stereo Bluetooth, multimedia player, the quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), web browser, CrystalTalk Technology, 2GB of internal memory, and 7.3 hours talk time with 400 hours if on standby. There’s no 3G radio on board, though I doubt the lack of it will mean much for the uber-rich folks who buy these kind of phones. The 4.97-ounce handset is available exclusively from the MOTO STORE
