Nokia has released new firmware for its N78 and N82 candybar smartphones. The Nokia N82 was updated to v31.0.016 firmware, and the N78 is now up to firmware v20.149.051.1. It is sad that this update adds UDP (User Data Preservation). UDP protects data stored in the phone memory so you don’t need to reinstall everything. Though, you’ll still want to make sure you’ve backed up any critical information before you apply the update. This is going to be great news for eager Nokia Nseries fans.

Two new OS versions for the BlackBerry Curve 8900 have been leaked online. The OS series is OS 4.6.1.133, and according to some people who have tried it, it works pretty well. So beside the new leaked OS of Blackberry Curve 8900, there’s also an older version of the Blackberry Curve OS available, which is OS OS 4.6.1.120. To start a new operating system install, you’ll need your BlackBerry, an Internet-connected PC, a USB cable and about an hour and half of free time—50 minutes or an hour for the upgrade process and 30 minutes or catch-up time afterwards. Mac users beware: RIM doesn’t currently offer the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software for Apple computers; however, industrious Mac owners running Parallels and who have a copy of Windows have been able to upgrade their BlackBerrys via Macs, though the process can be a bit clumsy.

Anyhow, both of these OS’ have not officially been released by RIM, therefore if you have never used a beta OS before we don’t recommend it.

As expected, Verizon’s Network Extender femtocell launched officially on Sunday. The Network Extender is an accessory that acts as a personal cell phone tower, allowing the user to make calls in locations where the general cellular coverage does not reach. Sadly, Verizon’s femtocell does not support EVDO (3G), VCAST or Location Based Services. The hardware is $250, and there is no additional charge for using it, but it does require access to a DSL or cable modem connection to the Internet. This is because the Network Extender essentially turns a standard Verizon phone into a VoIP device, where all calls go over the user’s Internet connection.

When the customer as a data plan on their smartphone, they will still be able to access the Internet on the mobile device. read more…
