Finally! The new iPod nano has been officially announced in nine glorious ‘nano-chromatic’ colors. Chief Executive Steve Jobs took the stage at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco to unveil the thinnest iPod Nano ever for the fall season, available in nine colors and at lower prices. Highlights include a redesigned iPod Nano with an accelerometer, which flips the screen when you rotate the player. That feature really comes in handy when watching videos and perusing photos. You can also now shake the player to shuffle the songs, which is sure to get old real fast and will have some not too bright users breaking the device in wiimote fashion. Sounds a bit like a Fischer Price toy for toddlers. The battery life is rated at 24 hours for music and 4 hours for video playback. All models come in 8GB for $149 (in stock today) an 16GB for $199 aimed at early next week at the latest (possibly this weekend in some locations). Jobs said an upcoming software update for the iPhone should fix many of the problems people had experienced, including dropped calls and sluggishness syncing to iTunes. An upgrade to iTunes will come with a new service called Genius playlist, which creates a playlist of songs that go well together from a person’s iTunes library with one click. Apple has taken the new nano to seriously ‘green’ levels using arsenic-free glass and making the 4G model highly recyclable. Nano is BFR-free, mercury free and PVC-free, making it the “cleanest” most “toxic free” iPods Apple has ever made. A brilliant in your face maneuver aimed at the highly critical Greenpeacers.
