The three new image sensors boasts pixel densities of 5.15, 8.11 and 12.25 megapixels. The range-topping Exmor IMX060PQ unit brings with it more than 12 million pixels into a 1/2.5 type CMOS image sensor.

The modules include the sensor, lens and autofocus mechanism. The “piezo” type lens motor used reduces power consumption when shooting video images. It also operates quickly enough to shoot 1080p video as quickly as 27 frames per second and 720p at a TV-level 30 frames per second as long as the processor and storage are also capable of the same speed. Sony rival Samsung has already released a 10-megapixel camera phone in Korea. By comparison Apple has a 2-megapixel camera for the iPhone, while the latest BlackBerry Storm touchscreen phone to be released on Verizon Wireless later this month will have a 3.2-megapixel camera. Look for handsets with 12 megapixel cameras hitting the market sometime in the middle of next year - especially those from Sony Ericsson.
