Future PSP firmware updates hint at new features for Fall 2008

Today Sony announced that the PSP will gain the ability to directly download games, demos, etc. from the PSN without having to first link the handheld to a PS3 or PC first. This Fall, PSP will gain direct access to the PlayStation Store. This long promised feature will allow for PSP users to download demos and more directly to the portable without having to go through the PS3 or PC. Perhaps most importantly, the PSP will also get the ability to take their multiplayer gaming online via the PS3. Select PSP titles will be able to connect to the PS3 and use the PS3 to set up matches for the PSP game. Assumably using the PS3 as a dedicated multiplayer server, options like voice and text chat will become available through the console, along with (improved?) online matchmaking. The first title announced that will get this connectivity is Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which happens to be big in Japan. In Japan, this is big news, as that title has sold over 2.4 million units. Hopefully, by exploiting the PS3’s backbone, the PSP will be able to perform some neat tricks beyond the stuff we’ve already seen before
