A guy going by the developer name GeoHot has released the first application to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS codename purplera1n . The tool, currently only available for Windows users, can be used to jailbreak iPhone 3GS models running OS 3.0 and seems a relatively straightforward process.
Hotz does warn users that you’ll need to backup your data just in case, and emphasizes that the tool is still in beta. Hotz also mentions that normally he does not make tools for the public, and rather have the iPhone Dev Team figure out the unlock process.
Here’s how to do it.
1. Find a Windows PC.
2. Install iTunes.
3. Download purplera1n.
4. Run purplera1n.
5. Wait.
6. Run Freeze.
7. Reboot.
