In China, a new worm targeting mobile devices running Nokia’s Symbian OS is spreading through malicious links contained in text messages. F-Secure and Fortinet are investigating a newly discovered mobile malware identified as SymbOS/Yxes.A!worm or “Sexy View”. The malware is affecting S60 3rd Edition series devices, and has a valid certificate signed by Symbian tricking the mobile device user into thinking it’s a legitimate application.

It propagates by repeatedly sending SMS messages containing a malicious URL to the phone numbers stored in an infected device, Manky said. If internet browsing is enabled on the device, when a user clicks on the message, they are directed to a web server to download a copy of the worm.

Fortinet adds that the malware gains information on the infected victim (such as serial number of the infected phone, subscription number etc) and posts this data to a remote server likely controlled by cyber criminals. It’s unclear how many users have fallen victim to the attack or its ultimate motives. The Trojan attempts to gather info. The serial number of the phone and the subscription number will be sent via Internet to a remote server.
