Nokia Maps: sophisticated map for mobile

Nokia Maps: sophisticated map for mobile

Nokia Maps is taking maps and navigation experiences to the next level and introducing the beta version of its Maps 2.0 navigation app onto the masses. Nokia also improves their map services Ovi, to toughen the competition against Google. Service will work seamlessly between mobile and desktop browser. Desktop will function as routing planner on top of the map and user can follow created route with mobile application. In addition to the car mode existing users will be familiar with, 2.0 adds “Walk,” a new mode tailored to pedestrian use. This mode features public transit information in 17 major cities with iconified route designations, and multi-sensor compass positioning (for devices like the Nokia 6210 Navigator, which has a built-in compass.) The new version brings also enhanced driving navigation mode, with proper turn indicators and transparent panels.

Satellite maps are now included (a la Google Maps) for 200 cities worldwide. The satellite maps are downloaded over the air and are saved automatically. Next time you start Maps, the satellite maps will be there, no need to download them again. There’s a hybrid view that combines satellite view with the regular maps. Another new feature is the ability to purchase “multimedia guides” for destinations that hook you up with photo, video, and audio streams that detail places to go and things to see on your magical journey. To install the software on a compatible phone, users must first download the application to their PC, and then install it on the handset through Nokia’s PC Suite. The software is compatible with Symbian devices running S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 (N81 8GB, N82, N95, N95 8GB, E90.).
