A recently filed patent reveals that Nokia is working on a 3D multi-touch interface, using pressure sensitivity to discern the third dimension. Explained as a “user interface for controlling an electronic device,” the multitouch solution would essentially allow you to pinch, zoom and rotate objects as usual. 3D multi-touch to be implemented, particularly on mobile devices with capacitive sensors, displays and a set of efforts.
The concept is that the screen reacts not only to where you touch, but also reacts to how hard you press on the display. The combination of the capacitive screen and the force sensors will know in which direction you are moving your finger and the strength of the touch. It is not clear whether the technology is still at the stage of concept or Nokia is already working on prototypes and preparing commercial samples. We’ll be sure to keep you informed of Nokia’s progress.
