It has been six months since Opera first announced its Opera Mobile 9.5 web browser back in February and it’s time that Opera Mobile got its due. Despite the version name (9.5) that sounds like a tired iteration which begs for the real makeover (10.0), Opera Mobile 9.5 beta is actually an important milestone for the only other mobile browser that doesn’t suck. Opera Mobile is a robust browser built on Web standards (and written with C and C++) that’s known for delivering a full Web experience to Windows Mobile and Symbian phones. Moreover, Opera Mobile 9.5 beta has a new user interface (UI), presented as more intuitive and cleaner than the UIs from the previous versions.
“It allows developers to debug JavaScript, inspect Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and the Document Object Model (DOM), and view any errors, making development for the mobile phone even easier.”
Of course, have in mind that this is a beta release, so expect some bugs and glitches
- There is no ActiveX support – hence embedded video streaming and Flash plugins will not work;
- custom-made IMEs (input method editors) are “buggy at best, not working at worst” when Opera Mobile 9.5 beta is installed on your handset;
- in overview mode, the text will not be displayed correctly;
- when installed on a memory card, Opera Mobile 9.5 beta may cause unexpected problems (crashes, most probably);
- It is only English supported
These being said, before installing the new Opera Mobile 9.5 beta on your handset, make sure not to expect a flawless functionality. Moreover, the installation of the 9.5 beta is only recommended for advanced users and developers, since it may lead to “data loss or other unintended actions”. Thus, regular users had better wait for the final 9.5 version of the famous mobile browser.Opera Mobile 9.5 beta for Windows Mobile can be downloaded, for free, from this address.
