After targeting the market for virtualizing servers and clients, VMware has now set its sights on mobile phones, announcing Mobile Virtualization Platform (MVP) on Monday. The thin layer of software ultimately will be embedded in phones, allowing one device to support two or more operating systems. Imagine a phone that sports both Google’s Android OS and Windows Mobile. Or a phone that can handle your work contacts and applications, but switch to a personal profile after-hours.

This virtual machine may be a compelling technology for handset makers and carriers. It could enable them to bring phones to market with fewer headaches, allowing a single software profile that works regardless of hardware and operating system. Unlike the PC market, which is based on generally accepted standards, the mobile phone market has hundreds of different hardware and software combinations for phones. The other benefit for consumers is ease in upgrading to a new phone. “With virtual environments, they can copy the virtual machine files over to the new phone and get up and running quickly,” Krishnamurti said.

The full specs of AT&T’s version of the HTC Touch Pro has shown up on the HTC WIKI, HTC’s semi-official user support outlet. Along with the Sprint Touch Diamond and the Sprint Touch Pro, the Fuze on AT&T represents the latest generation of Windows Mobile smartphones. It’s a mix of a few things: A slick, modern UI in TouchFlo 3D, a screen that finally gets beyond QVGA with 640×480 resolution, a smaller, compact size, more capacious memory, a default browser that isn’t flat-out embarrassing, and a processor that able to keep up with it all. While all of these increases can fairly be called evolutionary instead of revolutionary, they do add up to a qualitative change.

Read the full specs below after the break.
Processor: Qualcomm MSM7201A, 528MHz. The MSM7201A has become the go-to processor for many of the latest Windows Mobile devices (especially those made by HTC). While there have been questions of “GPS Lag†with the chipset, overall it’s a very powerful and very snappy proc. I find that it has a decent good mix of power and battery life (especially on the Treo Pro), and the Fuze is no exception (more on the battery life below). [Read More...]
