Mobile Safari getting support for psychedelic effects

April 8th 2008 |

At close examination Apple’s 2008 WWDC sessions revealed at least one iPhone gem, buried in the appropriately-named “Enhancing Your iPhone Web Application with CSS Transforms and Animations” overview: Safari’s getting a little bit of an update.

Mobile Safari getting support for psychedelic effectsWith firmware 2.0 baking to a delightfully golden brown right now in preparation for a June release, of course, it only stands to reason that the iPhone’s Safari implementation would get retooled a bit to pull in a more recent Webkit build and stay somewhat in sync with the headway Apple’s browser has made on the desktop, and we now know that CSS transforms and animations will be supported as a part of that.

What does that mean, exactly? In short, the feature allows web page elements to be twirled, zoomed, and skewed, making for some pretty eye-popping (or watering) effects. It’s all going to be accelerated by the iPhone’s hardware, too, meaning that the next ultra-annoying ad for some sketchy product that you view on your iPhone should really fly.

Verizon XV6900 annouced April 16

April 8th 2008 |

Verizon  XV6900, rendition of the HTC Touch theme, will be available online on April 16 with in-store stock following on come April 30. That’s a considerably healthier turnaround time from first rumor to availability than the XV6800, we’ve got to say — and hopefully, it’s a trend Verizon (and all carriers, for that matter) will be able to stick to.

On December,Google releasing the iPhone-optimized version of its Picasa Web Albums service. Now they’ve decided to Windows Mobile devices.

Picasa Web Albums on Windows Mobile

At the moment, they are talking about touchscreen-enabled WinMo 6 devices only, but soon, I guess, users with the non-touchscreen (Standard Edition) devices will be able to use the service as well.

Important thing to note is that Picasa Web Albums works with recently announced Google Gears for Windows Mobile, giving you an option to view selected albums offline. In addition, Gears also lets you add a Picasa icon to your Program Files folder so you can access your photos even faster.

Want to give it a try? Simply point WinMo’s Internet Explorer to picasaweb.google.com and take it from there.

Quake 3 Arena ported to iPhone/iPod Touch!

April 7th 2008 |

We all know there’s a lot happening under the hood of Apple’s touchy products, iPhone and iPod Touch. However, we had no idea the CPU can handle a game like Quake 3 Arena. To be fair, it’s been a while since the popular first-person-shooter has been released, but it’s impressive nevertheless.

Anyway, we’ve no details who did this and as you’re about to see from the following video – they even make use of the built-in accelerometer. It doesn’t mean Quake will be more “playable” on the iPhone/iPod Touch than it is on a PC, but will certainly make the gaming experience more engaging.

TAG Heuer’s Vertu

April 7th 2008 |

TAG Heuer’s VertuTAG Heuer’s foray into the mobile market could give Vertu a taste of its own medicine (seriously, just look at it) all except for that “fraction of a price” bit; turns out the rumors have the candybar, named “Meridiist,” priced somewhere around €3,400 to €3,900 (about $5,338 to $6,123) depending on how it’s configured.

Your fistful of euros will apparently get you a sapphire crystal display, 2 megapixel cam, 1.9 inch QVGA display (weak!), Bluetooth, and the full array of “luxury” materials like steel and leather when it launches later this quarter into the hands of the world’s privileged.
