NY-based gadget startup Peek — whose mobile device does email, and nothing else — has started selling its gadget on the Web ahead of its nationwide launch at Target stores next Monday. Peeks acts only as a device capable of receiving and sending unlimited emails via select services, including Gmail, Yahoo mail and AOL, among others via the GPRS data network. The tiny gadget has came in three colors — charcoal gray, aqua blue, and black cherry which looks like a cross between Research In Motion’s BlackBerry and a small calculator. It was designed by the famed IDEO, the designer of the Palm V digital organizer and TiVo video recorder, and looks sophisticated yet approachable. The gadget is already backordered online for a week. Onboard storage is 8MB, and there is no expansion options via memory card slots, which may restrict users who want to keep attachment-heavy emails. Specs also include a 104MHz ARM7 CPU, the full QWERTY keyboard and simple scrolling navigation interface on the 2.5-inch, 320×240 resolution color screen should make it easily accessible to users. The Peek will cost $100 and requires a monthly service fee of $20. It is available now at Getpeek.com. No service contract is needed, so a consumer can cancel the plan at any time.
