One of the more interesting new devices from Samsung is the UbiCell™ base station. A small white box that looks like a WiFi access point, the UbiCell is actually mini cell tower designed for CDMA 1x networks. The device connects to a mobile network through a broadband connection and is designed to provide enhanced cell coverage for the home. Unlike UMA technology, nothing special is needed for mobile handsets to take advantage of the base station. Samsung will be distributing the UbiCell through Sprint, though other versions (such as GSM) may appear on other carriers.

For end users, Samsung CDMA Ubicell™ provides service continuity by securing indoor coverage in homes and SOHOs. In addition, for telecommunication service providers, it enhances indoor call quality. Thus, service providers can lower their churning rate and secure their competitive advantage. Samsung CDMA Ubicell™ is designed for easy installation, operation, and use, taking into account that typical users do not have deep knowledge of communications and equipment.

Ubicell™ Benefits
1. Cost Effective Solution
Compared with high capacity Macro BTS, Samsung CDMA Ubicell™ reduces CAPEX (capital expenditures) and OPEX (operational expenditures)
2. Convenience
Samsung CDMA Ubicell™ provides continuous services in homes without changing mobile terminals, and supports automatic installation, Plug & Play, and remote maintenance/operation for end user’s convenience
3. Continuous Customer Value Creation
Samsung CDMA Ubicell™ supports migration plans by providing voice services, high-speed mobile data services, and wired/wireless convergence services.
Network Architecture

Sprint should begin selling the UbiCell in the Summer. Pricing is unknown but will be geared towards consumers.
