The SMT 5700 has been showing up on AT&T rebate sheets for the better part of a year now. What may have been a highly desireable $99 QWERTY smartphone a year ago is now destined to be overshadowed and crushed by the carriers current lineup, including the BlackJack II and the Palm Centro.
Nevertheless, it appears that AT&T is finally gearing up to launch the thing. The phone looks about the same as it did when we first saw the spy shots over a year ago, and we’re guessing the specs haven’t changed all that much.
For what it’s worth, the SMT 5700 will sport a 2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, and EDGE data. The original users manual touted Windows Mobile 5, but we’re hoping they’ve at least seen fit to upgrade the sucker to Windows Mobile 6, though a 6.1 refresh wouldn’t go unwelcome.
No word on when exactly this might hit shelves, but we’re not holding our breath.
