The light-weight user interface toolkit for Java ME (LWUIT) has been released as open source under the GPLv2+classpath exception license. The toolkit will allow developers to create user interfaces for Java-based mobile phone applications. The package is being made available for download by the company under the title ‘Light-weight UI Toolkit’ or LWUIT. . LWUIT supports visual components, theming, transitions, animation, and more. The company hopes that the open-source LWUIT will make it easier for Java developers to create applications for the Java ME mobile phone platform, further developing the growth of Java on mobile phones and smartphone handsets. To help you get started with the technology, more details about LWUIT can be found in the LWUIT Tutorial & on the Forum. Shai Almog has a whole blog dedicated to Java development & LWUIT, which has some cool video demos & more sample code.
