T-Mobile to offer first Android smartphone

T-Mobile will be the first carrier to offer a mobile phone powered by Google’s Android software, according to people briefed on the company’s plans which is expected to hit U.S. stores this year. Android is a software platform and operating system for mobile devices based on the Linux OS and developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance. It allows developers to write managed code in a Java-like language that utilizes Google-developed Java libraries. The HTC phone, which many gadget sites are calling the “dream,” will have a touch screen, like the iPhone. But the screen also slides out to expose a full five-row keyboard. A person who has seen the HTC device said it matched the one in the video. According to the Unofficial T-Mobile blog, the handset will actually be named HTC G1 and it will feature a 3 Megapixel camera and 3G connectivity, coming for a retail price of only $399, in three color versions (white, black and brown). Of course, we have to wait until official details emerge in order to be sure of these aspects, but it’s very likely that they are correct. Google Android mobile phone is expected to be announced in September and could go on sale in the U.S. as early as October.
