The new ROKR E8 from Motorola is set to be available exclusively from T-Mobile USA beginning July 7, 2008. Targetting at music lovers, ROKR E8 features Motorola’s ModeShift technology, which transforms the device from phone to music player with the touch of a button. The ROKR E8 offers a special morphing touch sensitive keypad and navigation area, with buttons that change depending on the current situation. When powered off, the surface of ROKR E8 is smooth, with no visible keys. Power on the device and it presents a virtual numbered keypad on the front surface. With one “press” of the virtual music key, the phone keypad disappears and control keys for the music player — play, pause, fast forward, and rewind — appear in its place. With 2GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot for up to 4GB of further expansion, the ROKR E8 is capable of holding plenty of music, though you shouldn’t forget the 2 megapixel camera with video capture that’s also on board.
Like most recent, prominent Motorola phones, it’s more about design than about features. The E8 is a 4.5-by-2.1-by-0.4-inch black slab, topped by a sharp 2-inch, 320-by-240 screen. With its a glossy black, this candybar offers a 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack, and FM radio. Unfortunately, it’s missing 3G. Subscribers and would-be subscribers will be able to nab the E8 come July 7 for $199.99 on contract.
